Lake Monduran or Fred Haigh Dam

Fishing in the Bundaberg Region

Mouth of the Burnett River

Burnett River
The Bundaberg, Coral Coast and Fraser Coast region is a great place to visit for anyone with a passion for fishing. You can choose from offshore and reef fishing, freshwater, estuary and river fishing, fly fishing and so much more! From stocked impoundments, 5 river systems, miles of isolated beaches and a short distance to southern end of the amazing Great Barrier Reef, the choice is yours no matter what the weather or time of year. Fish from the beach or banks, take your own tinny, or check out some of the areas professional charter operators.

Fresh Water Fishing - Stocked Impoundments

Lake Monduran

also known as Fred Haigh Dam (pictured left) is only one hour from Bundaberg and over the last few years has acquired a reputation for big barra.  There is a growing population of  fork tailed catfish which can dominate captures but with barra being caught well over the metre mark it’s easy to see why so many anglers are heading to Monduran to land that fish of a lifetime.  A bit of local knowledge certainly doesn't go astray at Monduran.  As it is a stocked impoundment you will require a 'Stocked Impoundment Permit'.

If you plan to stay, accommodation options include, cabins, holiday houses, powered and unpowered sites for camping, caravans and RV'S.  The park offers BBQ Area, Boat Ramp, Camp Kitchen, Facilities for Disabled, Fish Cleaning Area, Guest Laundry, Picnic Area, Sheltered Area, Showers, WiFi hotspot - free, Wireless Internet, Games/Recreation Room and Washing Machines.

Lake Gregory

(pictured right) Also known as the Isis Balancing Storage is a small impoundment between Childers and Bundaberg. It is not a lerge lake, aproximately 200 hectares in area with an average depth of 3.1 meters & holds just over 6000 ML of water at full capacity. You can access the lake by turning off the Isis Highway into Voss Road, then turning right into the dirt track when you seen the small pump shed.  There are no concrete boat ramps so this lake may not be suited to larger boats.  The weeds are usually pretty thick around the edges of the lake but once you get through into the open water you are sure get get a good feed of Bass.  Officially stocked with only Bass & Silver Perch, several captures of Saratoga & Tarpon have been reported.  Camping is not permitted and there are no facilities so take anything you need for the day and be sure to take your rubbish with you. The speed limit at lake Gregory has a max speed of 6 knots.  As it is a stocked impoundment you will require a 'Stocked Impoundment Permit'.

Purchase your 'Stocked Inpoundment Permits' online.

The Burnett River

Flows right through the heart of Bundaberg and has a network of creeks on the north side.  A great place to explore with your tinny. Historic Kirby's Wall is an ideal structure for silver bream anglers, and an extremely good fishing spot right in the middle of the river. The rocks near the Tallon Bridge and walkway below Queen's Park are also considered to be good fishing spots.

The Elliott River

Is a beautiful area with large stretches of clean white sand, ideal for spending a day with the family. There are many good snag free areas where children can enjoy fishing without parents having to worry about snagged lines.  The mouth of the Elliot River at Elliot Heads is a great swimming spot and the small island in the middle of the mouth is considered a hot spot by a lot of anglers.

You can launch your boat via the beach at the mouth of the river or there is a concrete ramp at River Heads, 5 minutes down the road from Elliott Heads.

If you love white sand and clear calm waters then the mouth of the Elliott River is definetly the place for you

The Kolan River

The Kolan River

Offers a range of fishing experiences - from fast-flowing deep holes after summer rains, rocky cliffs and outcrops around Avondale, to large sand flat areas with deep channels throughout at Miara (pictured left). The mangrove line is a proven successful spot and opens into a wide, sandy estuary mouth.

Baffle Creek

Is one of the few river systems remaining in southeast Queensland still in a relatively pristine state. This river can offer some amazing unspoilt mangrove stands and an incredible wild life show - as well as renowned fishing!

The Burrum River

The Burrum River

Is one of the region’s biggest with the Gregory, Isis and Cherwell rivers all joining in the flow. Extensive sand flats, channels and mangrove-lined banks offer the angler a piscatorial smorgasbord of fishing and crabbing options! Here you can explore sand flats, tricky snags, rocky outcrops and tough mangrove creeks within the system. Base yourself at Woodgate and head down to Walker's Point.
